Can modular homes be architecturally designed?

Modular homes have risen in popularity recently due to their fast turnaround times, eco-friendliness and feasibility for builds in remote locations.

But can off-site construction also offer a canvas for architectural creativity and luxury? The answer is a resounding yes!

Opting for a modular home doesn’t mean your design options are limited. In fact, marrying architectural design with the benefits of modular construction can lead to a truly remarkable house design that stands as a unique statement of personal style. Let's delve into this exciting fusion of possibilities.

Design features of a high quality

Why go with an architect?

At Westbuilt Homes, we have a team of talented draftspeople and interior designers who create gorgeous custom home designs. But we sometimes have clients who have a somewhat challenging block of land to build on and also want a house design that’s a bit more ‘out of the box’.

For example, they may have purchased a block in the hinterlands which overlooks a stunning view and they want their home design to flow with the contours of the landscape. Or their land might be narrow and they want to incorporate a container pool into the design.

In such cases, bringing in an architect to work on the project can be the right way to go.

Architects are experts in elevating the enjoyment and comfort of a home through an understanding of climate, space and layout. They have an in-depth understanding of how to best combine light, textures, patterns, current design trends and other elements in order to showcase aesthetic beauty. Architects can take the unique features of a challenging block of land, such as a narrow width or a steep slope, and incorporate those features into their designs.

Architectural design meets factory precision

The allure of architectural design lies in its ability to create something distinct and exceptional. Now, couple that creativity with the efficiency of off-site modular construction. The result is a harmonious blend of innovation and precision.

Off-site construction allows architects to conceive intricate designs while ensuring the highest level of quality control. As the building process takes place in the controlled environment of a factory, the impact of weather and other variables that can affect traditional construction are minimised.

Choosing an architect

Not all architects are familiar with the processes and intricacies of modular construction. It's important to find an architect who not only specialises in architectural design but also understands the nuances of modular home design.

Collaborating with an architect experienced in modular homes can make a world of difference. They possess the insight to seamlessly blend your architectural dreams with the practicality of modular building techniques.

Westbuilt can certainly recommend some experienced architects if this is a route you’d like to explore for your modular home build.

How we work with architects

When one of our clients engages an architect, we get in touch with the architect as soon as we can so that we can start working in collaboration with them. This will allow us to make sure that what the client is after and what the architect envisions can actually be achieved with a modular home and is cost effective to actually do so.

Whilst architects are experienced in producing amazing designs and drawings, they often don’t have the experience in cost estimating and construction to guarantee that the design they present you will be achievable within your budget and deadline.

Our role is to transform the architect's designs and drawings into the real thing, all the while managing budgets, permits, compliance, finishes, timeframes and so much more. We will bring a builder's eye to the architect’s plans. Wherever possible, we’ll suggest alternatives and other changes that we think will help to cut costs and save time whilst still meeting the brief of the project.

What about costs?

Engaging an architect to design your modular home is, naturally, going to increase the overall costs.

As a very rough estimate, you’re looking at around $4k - $7k per sqm for the design and construction. This takes into account the purchase of more high end materials, more complicated features, luxury fittings and other unique features. And of course, the size, shape and location of your block of land will influence the budget too.
