My name is Geoff and I’ve loved flying all my life. I have a Cessna 172 and I use it for flying my wife to work and use it myself to fly to different jobs around the place. So that we had plenty of space for landings and takeoffs, we purchased 1,800 acres overlooking the Gwydir river. We then just had to build a house on our property to make it our home.
We knew people who had modular homes and we saw a few of them available. But we thought we would like to build a brand new home as I’ve never had my own brand new home before.
A modular home seemed like a good choice as the new property has no infrastructure at all on it. There’s a shearing shed, that’s the only thing at all on it. No power. So our new modular home was built by Westbuilt in Warwick and transported down on three trailers.
Because we had nine foot ceilings, it caused a bit of a problem with power lines during the transport, but Westbuilt managed to get around them somehow.
It’s just the two of us living here with occasional visitors. We now have a lovely three bedroom home and we turned one room into an office. There’s plenty of room to enjoy our surroundings. You can look out the big windows, see the river, the mountains. It’s very good.
Getting the foundations right was a big thing because our property is on black soil which is prone to shifting. The black soil is about three metres in thickness so the foundations had to be strong, which Westbuilt definitely saw to. I reckon you can build the Sydney Harbour Bridge on our foundations. And the frame being steel is a big plus around this country because it keeps away the white ants.
We’re very pleased with Westbuilt,and we went to probably six different other companies before we decided on them. The initial consultation, the colour scheme selection process, the whole box and dice…it was all very well done.
